I think composition means creating meaningful writing to communicate ideas and thoughts that were otherwise quiet.
It must be practiced, taught, and practiced more.
It is not an inherent ability, but its raw material--the ideas and thoughts--are innate.
Every mind is swirling with words and feelings and experiences and hopes that fine, disciplined writing can deftly extract, transforming the inarticulate nebulous of thoughts and ideas into an understandable string of words.
(Yancey article)
- composition = writing to speak to multitudes by knowing your audience and how to manipulate your medium
(Hicks ch. 1)
- the potential of writing is dependent on the potential of the medium
- how much can you communicate with just pencil and paper, pen and paper? how does that change once the medium is digital? Text appearance can be manipulated, animated, enhanced with images..etc
